How to choose an acrylic paint for wood?

I want to paint wooden toys with acrylic paint but do not know which paint will I need. For example, there are acrylic paint sets on Amazon.co.uk for under 拢5.00 and then those which cost more than 拢10.00. I need a paint which would last and will not be scratched off easily.

Thank you.

The differences in acrylic paints:

Acrylic craft paints - the cheapest - these are thinned paints in bottles used for craft projects. The work find for most painted wooden projects. Always finish with several coats of poly or varnish. Sometimes sold in little pots in plastic strips - don't bother with these except for extremely low end projects.

Acrylic studient artist paints - mid price - sold in tubes or jars. These are paints suited for painting on canvas for students (as the name indicates). The colors may include the word ';hue'; like ';cadmium yellow medium hue'; which means that the color is mixed with other things besides pure cadmium yellow medium.

Acrylic professional artist paints - highest price - sold in tubes or jars. These are paints for the professional artist or the student who wants to use high end products and are developed for painting on canvas. They have the purest colors and the best textures and consistencies. I did not realize how much difference there was (I have used professional grade for years) until I taught a class and tried to economize by using a student grade paint. It was so thick that it did not work at all for the project and we had to throw away those tubes and get out the good stuff.

from your amazon.co.uk site this is an example of the craft acrylic paint you probably want:

As you can see they don't come in a kit, you buy individual bottles at an affordable price. (I have a large box of these paints for craft projects. When I finish using them, I put a thin layer of water on top of each bottle before putting them up to keep them from drying out. Then when I am ready to use it again I just shake it up good.)How to choose an acrylic paint for wood?
A good base coat is the answer to a smooth paint job and a good varnish is the best way to avoid chips, peeling, etc. Use an outdoor varnish that you brush on. The paints the above poster recommended are good.
