How to paint over wood furniture?

.. I purchased a Espresso Color, high hub style 3 piece dining set a few months ago.. Now with the new purchase I'm about to make the color isn't really working for me anymore.. I wanted to know how would I be able to paint over the wood in a black finish.. But I really don't want it to look cheap in anyway.. Those HGTV projects come to mind, they never look bad when paint over a finish.. How do they do that? How to paint over wood furniture?
The problem you face is that most of us that know what we are doing, are hesitant to respond. Far too many short cuts sound good after all.

Since I know I am aweful at explanations, I hope this helps...

Here's why. It requires an aweful lot of meticulous work by you (the one who is actually going to finish it). You need to mask everything off well. Prep is always the devil. After masking, you need to sand lighlty (in order to make sure that any paint adheres well).

After that, here's comes the fun, but meticulous part, you need to sand (lightly) and tack cloth all surfaces well (after every application). This is tedious work, but well worth it in the end, if you plan to have a great looking set.

A good 01, or 00, steel wool is required. After EVERY coat of paint, you need to rub lightly with the steel wool (and clean well with the tack cloth) in order to provide yourself with the furnished/finished end you desire.

Additionally, make sure you use a foam applicator to your furniture. By the time you reach the second or third application stage, you will be capable of determing when too much is....well too much. Rub off, and re-apply whenever necessary and you will be a VERY happy camper.

If you have any questions, I will be happy to immediately respond. Good luck, In the end I am positive you will be one happy person. I may be somewhat of a brute, but give me a chance, I am a kind one (i'll guarantee that). How to paint over wood furniture?
The only way to get a really professional finish is to spray paint the items. Just about any house painter has a spray painting rig and could do the job for you if you. There are also furniture restorers in many cities that can also do this type of work.

As to those HGTV projects. If you were to get up close to many of them in person, the finish would not be as good as it appears. It takes a lot of skill and work to get a good paint job on furniture using rollers or brushes. The TV tends to hide a lot of the imperfections in the paint jobs.
Yes you can do this. You may want to sand with 100-120 grit paper just enough to rough the finish before you paint Do this lightly, and it does not take much. I have done this in the past, and have done it both ways sand/no sand.and the paint will stick better After a light sanding. You will see the difference when you sand. When the finish is no longer bright you have gone far enough. Also you can not sand to much. Just do not sand through the finish that is there now.If you do it is not a big deal. You also may want to try some 200-300 wet or Dry paper or a finer grit sand paper like 300 grit. Good luck, You can do this.
There is always a shop. But they don't guarantee anything. You would be better off trading it in.

The HGTV projects....you are looking through a television lens (and they do multiple projects and take a picture of the best) Just like pictures of food, like steak, cakes, dessert, perfect lawns, perfect paint jobs. Reality is not always the same.
The reason it looks so good on the shows is that they do good prep to the surface before painting it. This work is not done during the 1/2 hour you see. A nice finish is best achieved by spraying the paint after you have done the prep.
There are many shops that will refinish furniture, check your local phone directory, also check with an antique shop to see if they can recommend someone.

A cabinet makers shops would also be a likely source.
You'll probably have to sand the furniture first so the new paint will stick to it better.
