Aerosol cans are quick, easy and not messy. No priming necessary but spot touch up of the original color may be. I suggest Krylon Crystal Clear, available at most hardware stores, Wal-Mart, etc.

Give it a few coats of Poly.
Sounds like a high gloss spray paint, prime first.
