How to prevent latex paint from chipping off of wood furniture?

I have a piece of Ikea furniture that i recently painted. Its wood veneer, and i gave it a light sanding (very light, since i didn't want to sand THROUGH the veneer) wiped off the dust with a damp cloth, let the boards dry, and then applied 2-3 coats of latex semi-gloss paint. Now after the piece has dried for 2 days, i'm noticing that its peeling/chipping very very easily. Basically any somewhat pointy object that it comes in contact with will peel off some of the paint. I've done some more web research and found that apparently the paint didn't adhere completely -- i guess i should have used a primer or sanded more thoroughly.

Since i don't want to sand the thing down and start over, is there anything i can apply OVER the latex to minimize the peeling? Its a very large piece, so i would prefer to use something that i can use a paint roller to apply, rather than a paintbrush. Thanks! How to prevent latex paint from chipping off of wood furniture?
try primer--it helps paint adhere and if it is a darker veneer or color can also keep from bleeding through a lighter color. On decorating shows, I have seen them use special primer to paint on paneling, so just ask paint\hardware store the kind of primer that you need. How to prevent latex paint from chipping off of wood furniture?
Don't scratch it. I find even when using primer as soon as you scratch it.. it comes off.. It's annoying to me. I have been known to use exterior paint indoors because its stronger.
No. No matter what you do now, the paint will continue to peel off and or chip. Your paint is not adhering...It is like trying to paint a candle...no matter what you do...you will not be happy. Woulda, coulda shoulda...lightly sanded, and apply a whit shellac primer, such as ';bullseye'; or Zinnzer..
you should have started by useing a liquid deglosser like peso to remove slick laquer , but since its to late for that, just go buy some spray cans of polyurathane in whatever sheen you want and spray it 2 or 3 coats. spray a spot on an out of the way place first to make sure it dosent react to the latex
If it's peeling/chipping already and is noticeable, why would you want to put a sealant on now?

Sometimes we can't find an easy fix, at least I can't. Must be my luck.

Do it right and start over.
