Since you suggest drawing our inspiration from the Grant Woods piece, I see this as a parody, so I would agree with the Goth look, or a Vampire theme for the female, and a video gamer, comic book collector type, similar to ';Comic Book Guy'; on The Simpsons, for the male.





In a more serious, traditional form, perhaps a couple in severe, conservative business attire, with one of them holding up a Blackberry or similar device in place of the spreader. But, their expressions should closely mimic the ones on the original painting.How Would You Paint ';American Gothic'; by Grant Wood to reflect our society today?
Hmm... I had to think to of what the painting reflects about the past. If I take it literally, for me it reflects about the farm life of long ago. So, If I change it to reflect the present, I would change every thing to their modern counterpart. The clothes are off to a newer style. The house too. There would be a tractor at the back. Hairstyles has to change. The expression would have to change too. The people would be more modern farmers.
They would be be true goths; black hair, eye makeup, pierced everything. And they would be texting each other in front of a mall.
