How to paint old wood shutters?

I have 14 panels of brown window wood shutters I'd like to paint white. The surface finish is weathered, rough, and probably needs to be sanded first. Is it something I can do myself, and would all the individual slats need to be dismantled? I am on a budget but don't know if this is a job better left for professionals. what finish is on them at the moment? If it is some type of clear varnish or stain it is better to put more of the same on as it is poor painting practise to try to use opaque wood paints over them.

Primer is for bare wood and some specialist primers for problems surfaces. If there is nothing on your wood then you apply a thinned coat of wood primer (pref. oil/solvent based). If they are currently painted then you do not need a primer. There is a lot of tosh talked on this website about priming painted surfaces - it is not necessary.

Once you have primed your bare wood shutters or if you have old paint on them you apply a coat of undercoat. Then either one gloss or two satin finish coats. I use Dulux or Sikkens paints.

You need to rub down old paintwork to key (scratch) the surface and allow the undercoat to get a hold of the old paint. But you do not need to rub down subsequent coats, only with a very fine paper to denib any bits if you like.

You will need to prime them first, and then use industrial paint.may need to rent a paint sprayer.
