I have seen these in magazines and one of my floors was done by a previous tenant. I'm interested in continuing the floor into another room. HOW? The lines look perfect with very little run-over, the squares are perfectly lined up. Did they use some special pattern device? Anyone know how to do this so it looks good? Thanks! How to paint a checkerboard pattern on a wood floor?
First of all, if you want the paint to adhere to the wood properly and last a long time, you need to either rent a buffer and get some 100-120 grit screens or hire someone to screen the floor for you. You will then need to clean the floor (large broom w/ towel folded over the top) twice, dampening the towel with mineral spirits to remove all dust and debris. Wait about 10 minutes for any mineral spirits to completely dry, then use 1/4';-1/2'; painters tape to tape off the squares. The easiest way to do that is to use a measuring tape and pencil to divide the room up on the perimeter of the floor to use as a guide for your tape. Make sure to roll over the tape to assure there are no air bubbles!!
You may have to paint two or even three times depending on the color and coverage of the paint you purchase. Porter Paints Fast Dry Enamel is what my dad's gym flooring company uses for game lines. You should then, if desired after paint is COMPLETELY dried ( I suggest waiting one day between coats if you do more than one), apply or have someone apply oil-based finish (decide if you want a matte finish or glossy) and you will have beautiful checkerboard floors for years to come! Big emphasis on the paint being dry before applying finish though or you will definitely have some nasty paint problems!! If after a year or a few years the finish is looking scratched, worn off, etc., you can screen it again and put another coat of finish (2 recommended, 24 hours between coats). Hopefully this small novel will help you!!How to paint a checkerboard pattern on a wood floor?
Just measure your room, and then divide the room by how many squares you would like across the length and width. Then use a ruler or a square to make straight lines. Tape off the squares you would like to paint the same color, then wait for those to dry and then tape off the other squares and paint them the other color. Make sure you use tape that won't ruin your wood floors or stick to paint!
