How to paint lacquered engineered wood i.e. prefab furniture?

I鈥檓 not exactly sure of the technical name for this product. It鈥檚 that pressed fiber, chemical smelling cheap furniture from places like Target %26amp; Wal-Mart like this http://www.stacksandstacks.com/image/526鈥?/a>

Do I need any kind of special primer or any other preparation before painting it? My pieces all have the fake wood grain covering. How to paint lacquered engineered wood i.e. prefab furniture?
Sand to give it some tooth, then prime with Kilz (that's my favorite), then paint color, lightly sand, do another coat of color, then clear acrylic polyurethane to finish. How to paint lacquered engineered wood i.e. prefab furniture?
Sounds like MDF. If it is, sand and prime. Then paint. I also had some MDF with plastic contact paper on the surfaces. I did the same with that, too. Worked. 5 years later no problems.
Most press-board with the wood grain look is not lacquered but has a vinyl/ plastic type coating. Most paints, especially latex can be peeled right of this surface when dry. Best bet rub down with alcohol (not rubbing) and the use an oil base paint. Rub each section just before applying paint. An alcohol based paint would do to, but usually is only found in primers. Still don't expect too much. Most likely the paint will easily loose it's adhesion at points of friction fairly easily.
