Is it possible to paint this wood table black and if so, how?

I have a great wooden table, with a leaf, that appears to have a layer of some kind of semi-shiney finish on it. It was given to me by my Mother and I'm scared to death to mess it up. I need very detailed instructions please! If I could take a picture and post it, I will. Thank you!Is it possible to paint this wood table black and if so, how?
it is a sin to paint wood.

Check into a product called Furniture Refinisher.

It is a very user friendly stripper.

It will take it down to the stain or natural finish without a lot of mess.

Then apply a finish.

Deft or Varathane work well.

Apply either of them with a foam brush and don't overwork them.

I myself prefer a hand rubbed wax finish.

Apply multiple coats of paste wax , rubbing it in with your hands until it squeaks and then buff it to a nice luster.

It makes a beautiful ';Natural'; look that wears well, is liquid resistant, lasts for many many years and doesn't scratch or chip like plastic finishes. Is it possible to paint this wood table black and if so, how?
As stated previously, you will need to sand the ';semi-shiney'; finish off. Just sand until the finish is removed if painting. Then wipe down the table to remove sawdust with a damp rag. Next, you need a good primer coat (1 or 2 coats depending on the darkness of your table and especially if the new color is light). Allow table to dry thoroughly between coats. I would choose at least a satin and maybe a semi-gloss paint which is easier to clean later. Last, paint on the color and enjoy your new table!
Hi,

You just need to clean %26amp; dull the finish, not remove it all. Have the paint store add 1/2 oz black colorant to the primer, 1 coat is sufficient. Then apply 2 or 3 coats gloss black latex or oil. If you use latex add a small amount of floetrol for a very smooth %26amp; brush free finish.
if such a great wooden table why would you want to paint it at all, clean it up first soap and water, if not satisfied take the finish off and stain it with a black stain ..........ebony or ?
