Paneling can be painted but you need to follow some steps so that it doesn't end up scratching/peeling off. Wash all the paneling with Painters Helper No Sand. Then get a primer with a thick consistency. Let dry at least 24 hours. Then paint with whatever color you want. You will need a brush and a roller. The brush in not only for cutting in but depending on how deep the groves are you will need to brush each ';stripe'; in the groove, then use roller to paint the rest.

As for suggestions on what color to paint - I would have to see pictures of the angles etc. Maybe you could post them on Flickr.com?How to paint Faux Wood Panel Attic with Tan Carpet!?
im a decorator i suggest you paint it all in a bright colour like white or cream to give the room more of an open feel. paint it with a brush probably 2 inch is best and use acrylic eggshell, this way it will be easier and cheaper for you and wont smell as much.
